I NTEREST has been focused recemitly umpomi the hemoglobinopathies amid their elucidation by means of electrophoresis. Included among these are thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, hemoglobimi C, D, amid E disease, amid their combimiatiomis, all of which share fri common a number of hematologic ahnormalities. Dameshek has stated that the diagnosis of thalassemia is made omi a number of more or less nonspecific hematologic findings ins the absence of a demonstrable eleet.rophoretic abnormality of hemoglobin.’ For example, the study of thalassemia iii Thailand has beems reinterpreted as representing a combimiat.ion of thalassemia amid 11gb E disease.2 ‘ It is the purpose of this paper to presemit a study of thalassemia in a Haw-aiian family of Filipino extraction, with a cornplete study of the case which prompted the investigation.
